A shopping centre and visitor attraction built on a pier at the edge of Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, with shops, restaurants, a video arcade and street performers, close to North Beach, Chinatown and the Embarcadero. Its best-known residents are the California sea lions that haul out on the floating docks in the pier's marina, filling the air with their barking; visitors gather to watch them in a scene much loved by families and children. The pier also has a two-storey carousel, the Aquarium of the Bay, quirky shops and bay cruises, and from its end there are views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. Entry is free and activities cost extra. The sea lions are usually most numerous in winter and spring, and the historic F streetcar along the waterfront is an easy way to get here.
