The most famous and most photographed of Jiuzhaigou's lakes, a shallow, clear lake whose water shifts between blue, turquoise, green and yellow in patches side by side, with ancient tree trunks lying criss-crossed on its bottom, fallen long ago and coated in lime, so they look painted under the water. It lies in the western Rize valley, seen whole from a viewpoint on the slope before a boardwalk leads down to its shore, and its colours are strongest in autumn, when red and yellow trees ring it. The same valley holds the broad Arrow Bamboo Lake, about 170,000 square metres and 6 metres deep at 2,618 metres, where the film «Hero» was shot in 2002; Panda Lake, which spills into falls dropping 78 metres in three steps; and quiet Mirror Lake, which reflects the mountains when the air is still. The lake is covered by the Jiuzhaigou Valley ticket, CNY 190 plus CNY 90 for the bus in season, per visitor guides. Get off the bus at its stop, and come in the morning before the crowds.
