Tianjin's loveliest old quarter, a quiet district of parallel streets named after five cities of southwest China; it was part of the British concession in the early twentieth century, when Tianjin was divided among several foreign concessions. The quarter holds more than 230 buildings in English, French, Italian, German and Spanish styles, from Renaissance to Gothic and eclectic, and more than fifty were homes of political and cultural figures of modern China, with plaques telling their owners' stories. At its heart is Minyuan Square, a sports ground built by the British concession council in 1920 and later turned into an open public square that kept its old stands and façades, and horse-drawn carriages take visitors on tours among the villas. The quarter is free and always open, with carriage tours paid separately, per visitor guides. It is best explored on foot or by bike in spring and autumn, when the trees shade the streets.
