A Catholic cathedral in central Tianjin, begun in 1913 in the old French concession and known as Xikai Church after the district it stands in. It is the largest Romanesque building in Tianjin and all of north China, and the seat of the Tianjin diocese. Three green domes crown it, and bands of red and yellow brick alternate across its front, so at the end of the Binjiang Avenue shopping street it looks like a European painting among modern shops; it is lit at night. Viewing the building is free, and it is usually open by day outside Mass times; visitors are asked to keep quiet and respect worshippers, and hours vary by day, per visitor guides.
