Sweden's oldest people's park, created in the late nineteenth century on the initiative of the labour movement as a place of leisure within reach of workers at a time when private gardens were closed to them. That origin still explains its shape: it is not a landscaped botanical garden but a compound of halls, stages, cafés, playgrounds and open ground, designed for collective use rather than contemplation. Today it is among the most diverse spaces in Malmö, which reflects the city itself, where immigrants make up a large share of the population. Walk through on a summer day and you hear many languages and see the same ground used in different ways. It holds a large playground and a small free petting zoo, which makes it one of Malmö's better options with children. Events, concerts and markets run through the summer, and the programme is what decides the value of a visit on any given day.
