The Fort of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios stands on a height above Vila dos Remédios and the Santo Antônio anchorage in the north of Fernando de Noronha, and was the island's main defence. After French forces occupied the island in 1736, Portuguese troops drove them out in October 1737 and began the fort on the ruins of an older Dutch position, to a design by the military engineer Diogo da Silveira Veloso: an irregular stone polygon with fourteen angles fitted to the clifftop. The national heritage institute restored it to its 18th-century form, adding shops, a café, a bookshop and cultural spaces, and it reopened as one of the island's main attractions, with guided visits and films on its history. It is also one of the finest sunset viewpoints on Noronha. Entry is paid, so check the current price before you go.
