The heart of Gjirokastër's old town, where lanes paved in white and grey stone meet below the castle, lined with Ottoman stone houses under roofs of stone slabs, which gave the town its nickname, «city of stone». The bazaar is full of craft, carpet, antique and souvenir shops, cafés and traditional restaurants, with the Bazaar Mosque and its dome and minaret, the only surviving mosque of the old Ottoman town. Around it are historic houses open to visitors, the best known being the Skënduli and Zekate houses, tall tower houses of stone with ornate guest rooms and carved wooden ceilings that tell the story of large families of the past. Wandering is free and the historic houses charge small fees. The lanes are steep and slippery after rain, so wear shoes with good grip. It is loveliest in the evening when the lanes are lit.
