Durban's famous beachfront, a long stretch of golden sand and a wide promenade on the Indian Ocean running from uShaka Beach in the south northwards, with a path linking it to Moses Mabhida Stadium, and one of the liveliest places in the city. Unlike Cape Town's cold beaches, Durban's water is warm most of the year thanks to the warm Agulhas current, so swimming works even in winter. Piers divide the beach into sections, most watched by lifeguards all year and protected by shark nets. On the promenade people walk and cycle, surfers gather by the piers, and food stalls and restaurants line the way, including spots serving bunny chow, Durban's famous hollowed-out loaf filled with curry. You may also meet the colourful rickshaws with pullers in traditional Zulu dress. The promenade and beaches are free, and early morning is loveliest, when the sun rises over the ocean. Swim only in guarded areas between the flags.
