A large marine entertainment complex on Durban's beachfront, opened in 2004, combining one of the continent's biggest aquariums, a water park, a beach and a village of restaurants and shops, and one of the city's most popular family outings. The aquarium is built inside the hull of an imagined old wrecked cargo ship, so visitors walk its corridors as if deep under the sea, past tanks of sharks, rays, sea turtles and tropical fish, and sometimes African penguins. Beside it is a water park with slides and lazy rivers for children and adults, plus activities such as helmet walks among the fish and rope bridges. Next to the complex is uShaka Beach, the first beach of the Golden Mile. Tickets depend on the sections chosen, with prices on the official site. Weekdays outside school holidays are the best time to visit; allow at least half a day.
