Gruta da Fumaça, the «Smoke Cave», is a cave in the municipality of Iraquara in the northern Chapada Diamantina, about ten kilometres from town and seventy from Lençóis. It is described as one of the richest geological formations in the region for the variety of its stalactites and stalagmites. The cave consists of a large hall surrounded by smaller, richly decorated chambers, and measures around six hundred metres according to a survey by cave specialists in 2013. Its highlight is a chamber whose ceiling formations look like thousands of hanging needles. The «Hall of Light», with its white columns, has been closed to visitors to protect its fragile formations. Scenes for a well-known Brazilian television drama were filmed here in 2008. The cave is on private land, and visits are with a local guide who provides a helmet with a lamp. The tour takes about forty-five minutes along a route marked with tape to protect the formations, and it combines well with Iraquara's other caves.
