Gruta das Encantadas, the «Cave of the Enchanted Women», lies in the south of Ilha do Mel inside the «Cave Hill», made of migmatite rock. A vein of black diabase, weaker than the rock around it, runs through the hill, and the sea wore it away over time until the cave formed. Its name comes from a local legend that mermaids lived in it, and a walkway has been built to its entrance to make the visit easier. It is near Encantadas, one of the island's four villages, which boats reach directly from Pontal do Sul in about half an hour. The visit is free. The island boat costs about R$49 return, and the state is bringing in an access fee and a cap on visitor numbers, so check before you travel.
