A historic town about ten kilometres south-east of central Kunming, near the north shore of Dian Lake and the lower Baoxiang River. People lived here some 3,500 years ago, it is counted among the cradles of the ancient Dian culture, and its name, Guandu, «official crossing», comes from a ferry set up here under the Nanzhao kingdom. Its history runs back more than a thousand years, and it was restored and partly rebuilt between 2001 and 2003. Its lanes, traditional houses and many temples and pavilions are now a popular outing from the city, and locals count «six temples, seven pavilions and eight shrines». Entry to the town is free. Kunming has many Hui Muslim restaurants under the halal sign; with local snacks, ask about pork.
