Yunnan's largest museum, founded in 1951 and moved on 18 May 2015 into a large modern building in south Kunming, telling the history of the province and the cultures of its many peoples from ancient times to today. Its best-known treasures are the bronzes found in the Jinning tombs on the south shore of Dian Lake, from the ancient Dian kingdom, with fine decoration showing animals, battles and scenes of daily life from more than two thousand years ago. Its galleries also cover Yunnan's peoples, their costumes and crafts, painting, calligraphy and ceramics, and the history of the old Tea Horse Road that linked Yunnan with Tibet and South Asia.
