Lake Hallstatt is the legend's mirror: eight kilometres of emerald water between the Dachstein's walls — drinking-pure (literally: its water potable), Alpine-cold always, the famous village afloat upon it. Live it by water, not gaze: the classic ferry from the rail station is Austria's loveliest arrival; the wooden electric Fuhtzen boats (or row and pedal craft) rent at the village jetties, showing the houses from their original angle — the boatmen's angle of seven thousand years; and the steam-styled Stefanie circles the lake in an hour. Summer swimming goes from Obertraun's grass shores (Bad Insel) for the brave — 20 degrees at peak — and the lake-loop cycle (two hours) ranks among Austria's finest water paths.
