Da Nang's central market, a two-storey hall by the Han River on a site used as a market since 1940; the present building was rebuilt from 1989. The ground floor is a maze of food stalls: dried squid and fish, the fermented fish sauces Da Nang is known for, coffee, sweets and the dried fruit visitors buy as gifts. Upstairs, tailors and fabric sellers make clothes to measure, often within a day or two, alongside stalls of ready-made clothing and souvenirs. Prices are lower than in the hotel shops, and bargaining is normal for clothes. The market is busiest in the morning and closes in the evening, when life moves to the riverside and the Dragon Bridge.
