A performing arts centre on the bank of the Qiantang River at the southern end of Qianjiang New City, completed and opened in July 2004 to designs by the Canadian architect Carlos Ott, with 55,000 m² of floor space; its plaza joins the civic square of the new city centre. It holds a 1,600-seat horseshoe-shaped opera house, a 614-seat concert hall in the classic shoebox form and a 700-seat sunken open-air theatre, with a musical fountain added in front in 2015 that plays on some evenings. To the south-west stands the Hangzhou International Conference Center with its golden sphere. Viewing the building from outside is free, and the area is at its best in the evening, with the riverside towers lit up, while shows are ticketed one by one.
