Hangzhou's central business district on the north-west bank of the Qiantang River, about 4.5 km from West Lake; its core of about four square kilometres was completed in 2008, with the civic centre, skyscrapers and cultural venues around a broad axis. Its best-known spot is the City Balcony, a wide riverside plaza where people gather in the evening for the light show, when the façades of the towers on both banks become one giant screen reflected in the river. Watching is free; the light show runs on Fridays and Saturdays at 7.30 pm and 8.30 pm and on other days at 8.30 pm, with special schedules on holidays, per visitor guides.
