A dam in the mountain enclave of Hatta, part of Dubai, about 130 kilometres from the city. Behind it lies a turquoise lake framed by the dark rocky peaks of the Hajar Mountains, a world away from Dubai's desert and coast. Visitors climb a stairway up the dam wall to a walkway over the lake and mountains, and platforms along the shore launch kayaks and pedal boats that can be hired to paddle between the peaks. The area also has smaller dams such as Al Khattem, hiking and mountain-bike trails and the Hatta adventure hub, and many visitors pair the dam with the nearby Hatta Heritage Village on a day trip from Dubai. Looking at the dam and lake is free; kayaks and boats are charged by rental time. Winter is the best season, and early mornings are quietest before the weekend crowds.
