A grand white Friday mosque on the right bank of the Yesil river in Astana, opened on 6 July 2012 after three years of building. Its name, «Hazrat Sultan», is one of the epithets of the Sufi sheikh Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, whose famous mausoleum stands in the city of Turkistan. Built in classical Islamic style with traditional Kazakh ornament, it holds 5,000 worshippers, and 10,000 on holidays. It is crowned by the largest dome in Kazakhstan, 51 m high and 28 m across at its base, ringed by eight smaller domes and four 77 m minarets. The mosque and its grounds cover more than 11 hectares, next to the pyramid of the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation, the Kazakh Eli monument and Independence Square, so one walk takes in all of them. Its white domes and minarets are at their best at sunset and lit up at night. Entry is free. It is a working mosque, so dress modestly, women cover their hair, and prayer times are best avoided.
