The last station of the Hejaz Railway, which the Ottoman Empire built from Damascus to Medina. It opened in 1908 in the Al-Anbariyah district, about a kilometre south-west of the Prophet's Mosque, and its long stone building with arcades and decorated windows is one of the finest historic buildings in the city. A project launched in 1983 turned the station into a museum complex. It holds the Al-Madinah Museum, which shows some 2,000 objects on the city's heritage and history across fourteen halls, including halls on Medina in the Prophet's time and on how the Prophet's Mosque grew, and the Hejaz Railway Museum, opened in 2006. In the station yard are a stretch of the historic track, a train shed, and old locomotives and carriages, some brought from other stations along the line. The museums were reported closed for refurbishment in 2026, so check before you go. The station's facade can be seen from the street at any time, and it fits into a walk with the Mosque of Al-Ghamama and the Prophet's Mosque.
