No — and the reverse is equally true: two experiences, Pompeii's city-scale epic of streets against this density and closeness of preservation. The hurried, or those with children, may honestly find this the better fit; the antiquities lover needs both.
Volcano buses leave from its station too, and it is the nearer base — the classic combination: Herculaneum morning, booked crater slot midday, Naples by late afternoon. Lighter than the Pompeii–Vesuvius day and better with families.
Modern Ercolano rests on the three unexcavated quarters of the old town — from the site's rim you see today's houses at the very edge of the dig: two strata of time face to face, among archaeology's strangest sights anywhere.

Herculaneum is Pompeii's smaller sister and clearly the better preserved: the wealthy seaside town was buried by the same eruption of 79 AD but under hot mudflows rather than ash — which hardened into a shell preserving what Pompeii cannot: entire upper floors, carbonised wooden doors and beds in place, frescoes and mosaics in near-glowing colour. The site is compact and dense: fifteen minutes crosses it, and every house outdoes its Pompeiian counterpart — the House of the Deer, Neptune's mosaic house, the nearly intact baths. And along what was the shoreline, skeletons line the boat sheds: hundreds of fugitives caught by the burning surge — the bay's harshest, most eloquent sight. Smaller and less famous, it stays near-quiet even in season — two full hours suffice, with more shade and kinder steps, making it the smarter choice for those with children or against the sun.
