The Hilti Art Foundation is an art collection in Liechtenstein that since 2015 has shown selected works in a white cubic building joined directly to the Kunstmuseum in Vaduz, known as the «White Cube». It draws lovers of modern and contemporary art, and it is one of the best reasons to extend a short visit to the tiny capital. The family owning the Hilti company began collecting in the 1970s, and it became a foundation in the 1990s. It focuses on art from about 1880 to 1945 and on post-war work up to today. It holds about 200 paintings and sculptures, with works by Picasso, Kirchner and Giacometti, across Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism and Surrealism. Building began in June 2011 to a design by Morger and Dettli of Basel, a cube of polished concrete that looks white, with broad horizontal windows. Its pale front sits beside the black wall of the Kunstmuseum, creating a strong contrast on the square. Inside are bright rooms showing selected single works, both paintings and sculpture. It is about 200 m from central Vaduz, below Vaduz Castle, and pairs with the Kunstmuseum next door. Check hours before you arrive, and ask about a combined ticket for both. Do not touch the works, ask about picture rules and leave large bags in lockers if asked. The square looks lovely at night, when the windows glow.
