A long sandy beach running about five kilometres from central Hua Hin south to Khao Takiab hill, Thailand's oldest seaside resort, frequented by the country's kings and Bangkok's residents since the early twentieth century. Its atmosphere is calm and family-oriented, unlike the bustle of Pattaya and Patong. The beach offers its famous horse rides on the sand, umbrellas and loungers for hire, seafood stalls, and upscale hotels and resorts behind it. The water is shallow and calm on most dry-season days, suitable for children, though jellyfish sometimes appear in certain months. The beach is free and always open, reached by paths between the hotels. It is loveliest early in the morning, when it is quiet and fresh, or in the late afternoon with sunset behind the town. Hua Hin is a favourite with families and retirees, about three hours from Bangkok, with halal restaurants in town. Pair the beach with Khao Takiab hill at its southern end for one afternoon outing.
