Entirely different: Thun Castle is a large medieval fortress about rule and war; Hünegg is a private house about taste and the daily life of the wealthy around 1900. For lovers of interiors and Art Nouveau: Hünegg is a rare and rewarding experience. For the general visitor: Thun Castle comes first and is easier to reach. Combine them by Lake Thun boat in one day if the season is open.

Hünegg is not a medieval castle but a **grand aristocratic house of 1861** on the shore of Lake Thun, built in the neo-French-Renaissance style and then entirely redesigned inside in 1900 in **Art Nouveau and Jugendstil** — which is the secret of its importance: the interior survives exactly as it was, with its original furniture, wallpapers, lighting and bathrooms. The house was never emptied or modernised: you walk through the rooms of a wealthy family of 1900 as though they left yesterday — a bedroom with carved beds, a dining hall, a bathroom modern by the standards of its day, a smoking room and a library. One of the best preserved examples of Art Nouveau interiors in Switzerland. An English garden of veteran trees surrounds it, descending to the lake, with a view of the Oberland mountains. Seasonal and afternoons only — a quiet, specialist visit for lovers of design and interiors.
