Ilha da Pintada is one of Porto Alegre's islands in the Jacuí River delta, opposite the city centre, part of the Jacuí Delta State Park and the city's most populated island, in a district called the «Archipelago». It lives from fishing, handicrafts and local cooking, and offers a completely different side of the city: fishermen's houses, boats and calm water minutes from downtown. Its best-known dish is «tainha na taquara», mullet grilled on a bamboo stick, the island's speciality. Its crafts are known through the «Art'Escama» project, in which the island's women turn fish scales into jewellery such as earrings and rings. The island was historically known for supplying skilled shipbuilding labour, and its shipyards played a large part in its growth. The island is reached by car over bridges or by boat, and suits a fish lunch and a tour of the delta. It was hit hard by the 2024 floods, so ask about restaurants and tours before you go.
