The Orla do Guaíba, officially Parque Jaime Lerner after the urbanist whose office designed it, is Porto Alegre's waterfront park: 3.4 kilometres along Lake Guaíba from the old Cais Mauá port to the Beira-Rio stadium, with cycle paths, cafés, sports courts and a skate park described as the largest in Latin America. Its northern end is marked by the Usina do Gasômetro, a thermal power station opened in 1928 whose tall chimney, added in 1937, became a symbol of the city; saved from demolition by a public campaign, it reopened as a cultural centre in 1991. The first stretch of the park opened in 2018. The waterfront looks west across the lake, so late afternoon brings the sunset; one of its venues is even called the Pôr do Sol (Sunset) amphitheatre. The May 2024 flood damaged the first stretch and repairs began in May 2025, so some kiosks may be closed.
