Ilha do Japonês, «the Japanese Man's Island», is a small island in the Itajuru Canal in Cabo Frio, ringed by clear shallow water and white sand that visitors compare to the Caribbean, and one of the town's favourite family outings. Its name is credited to the Japanese immigrant Ysaburô Yamagata and his family, who lived on the island in the 1920s according to the town's official tourism site, after the family had worked in fishing and salt production in the Lakes Region since the start of that century; an academic study mentions a fishing school founded in 1911. There are no restaurants on the island itself, but small restaurants and bars stand around it. It is reached by a short boat hop or by schooners from the town centre, and its shallow water suits children. On summer nights locals and visitors net shrimp.
