One of Kuala Lumpur's oldest shopping streets, known in British times as Batu Road and later named after Tuanku Abdul Rahman, the first king of independent Malaysia. People call it Jalan TAR for short, and it runs north from Merdeka Square towards Chow Kit. It is lined with pre-war buildings whose facades have been preserved, alongside shops selling fabrics, traditional clothes, gold and shoes, and malls such as Sogo. Off it runs Jalan Masjid India, the quarter known for fabric, spice and perfume shops, Islamic clothing and Indian Muslim restaurants. The area is known for prices that are reasonable next to Bukit Bintang, and Malaysians come here to buy fabric and baju kurung before Eid, when it turns into a crowded Ramadan bazaar that runs late into the night. On Saturday evenings the lane beside it holds a night market of fabrics and food. Walking it is free; crowds are heavy at weekends and during Ramadan, so watch your belongings. Get there by train to Masjid Jamek, Bandaraya or Sultan Ismail stations.
