Bauru's Municipal Botanical Garden covers 321 hectares, mostly of «cerrado», the Brazilian savanna, with patches of seasonal forest and marshland vegetation, at kilometre 232 of the Comandante João Ribeiro de Barros highway. It opened on 4 March 1994 on the site of the former Tenri ecological park. The garden keeps plant collections including orchids, bromeliads, ferns, bamboos, palms and climbers, along with aquatic and medicinal plants. Since 2018 it has been part of the Aimorés state wildlife refuge. It has walking trails, exhibitions and environmental education programmes with guided visits. A large fire hit it in October 2019, and its vegetation has gradually recovered. It suits a nature walk on the cerrado trails, especially in the morning, and stands next to the zoo, so the two fit into one day. Entry is usually free; check times.
