Bauru's Municipal Zoo is a public zoo in inland São Paulo state known for its work conserving Brazilian wildlife. It opened on 24 August 1980 on the Comandante João Ribeiro de Barros highway and is nationally known for its success in breeding threatened species. It was the first zoo in Brazil to breed penguins, in 2013, and is one of twenty zoos worldwide fully photographed for Google Street View, so you can wander it virtually before visiting. Its environmental education centre runs courses for children and young people, making it a reference for leisure, research and conservation. It is Bauru's biggest attraction and stands next to the city's botanical garden on the same highway, so the two fit into one day. Tickets are usually inexpensive; check opening times and closing days.
