The Porto Alegre Botanical Garden opened to the public on 10 September 1958 with nearly 600 plant species, after attempts dating back to the early 19th century, when King João VI sent seedlings from the Rio de Janeiro garden that never reached the city. A cactus house opened in 1962; collections of the state's trees and of scented and spice plants followed, and in the 1990s nurseries for bromeliads, orchids and succulents and a seed bank were built. Tickets are R$6 and R$3 reduced, free up to age 5; it opens Tuesday to Sunday 9:00-17:00.
