Jeondong Cathedral is a church of red and grey brick in the centre of Jeonju, with a tall central tower and two smaller towers with green domes, surrounded by big trees that colour in autumn, on the edge of the traditional quarter of Korean houses. It was built between 1908 and 1914 in the Romanesque-Byzantine style under the French priest Victor Louis Poisnel. Today it is a working parish church and a listed historic site. It stands beside the Jeonju Hanok Village, with hundreds of old Korean houses, so most people visit it together with the village. You stand in the square to see the towers and patterned brick, step inside for the arches and stained glass, then cross the road into the hanok village with its lanes, curved-roof houses, cafés and craft shops. In the evening the facade is lit and people sit in the square before it. It is about 1.2 km in a straight line south of central Jeonju. Keep quiet during mass and dress modestly.
