The Confucian temple of the old town of Jiading in north Shanghai, built in 1219 under the Southern Song and rebuilt many times under the Yuan, Ming and Qing; nicknamed «the first in Wu», it is among the most complete Confucian temples preserved in China and has been a protected national monument since 2013. Covering 1.8 hectares, it includes the Lingxing Gate, the Pan pool and the Dacheng Gate and hall, and since 2006 it has housed the China Imperial Examination Museum, the only museum in the world devoted to the exams through which China chose its officials for centuries, with models of exam cells and old cheating aids. Entry is free; it is open Tuesday to Sunday from 8.30 am to 5 pm, last entry 4.30 pm, per visitor guides.
