A historic public garden between Fes el Bali and Fes el-Jdid, created by Sultan Moulay Hassan I in the nineteenth century when he built the walls that linked the two cities for the first time and placed the garden in the corridor between them. It was reserved for the royal elite until it opened to the public in 1917. After years of neglect it was restored between 2006 and 2010 on the initiative of King Mohammed VI and reopened in 2011. It covers about seven and a half hectares with more than three thousand plant species, in sections that include an Andalusian garden and a bamboo garden. At its centre is a long avenue between towering palms, pools with colourful fountains, a lake reflecting palms and the city walls, and an old wooden waterwheel on the Fes River. It is one of the rare green spaces inside the old city, where the people of Fes come to stroll, especially at sunset. Entry is free. It is a few minutes from Bab Bou Jeloud and the Batha Museum, a calm break after exploring the medina's crowded lanes.
