A long, calm beach on Phuket's west coast, between busy Patong to the south and Surin to the north, framed by green hills dotted with villas. Kamala village behind it was originally a Muslim village, with a mosque and halal restaurants, and many of its people are still Muslim fishermen. The beach is far quieter than Patong, with broad golden sand; its northern end is the prettiest and greenest, shaded by trees with wooden boats drawn up in front. The village has shops and fairly priced restaurants, and on the southern hill a memorial remembers the victims of the 2004 tsunami that struck this coast hard. The famous Phuket FantaSea show is close to the village. The beach is free. The village is a good choice for Muslim families staying in Phuket, for its calm and the mosque and halal food close by. The sea is calm and clear from November to April; from May to October waves are high and rip currents dangerous on the west coast, so obey the red flags. It is about a quarter of an hour by car from Patong, along a coast road with lovely sea views.
