A large, partly rebuilt castle, seat of the Kaga Domain, which the Maeda clan ruled for fourteen generations until the Meiji Restoration of 1871. Maeda Toshiie rebuilt it in 1592; its main keep burned in 1602 and was never rebuilt, and the castle burned several more times after that. It has been a National Historic Site since 2008. Its surviving original structures include the Ishikawa Gate, built in 1788, and the Sanjukken Nagaya and Tsurumaru storehouses, all Important Cultural Properties. The Hishi Yagura turret, the long Gojikken Nagaya storehouse and the Hashizume-mon turret were rebuilt in 2001 using traditional methods and can be entered to see their timber frames. The whitish roof tiles are made of lead to resist fire, and legend says they could be melted down into bullets in a siege. Broad lawns and stone walls in several building styles surround the buildings, with the Gyokusen'inmaru Japanese garden beside them. The castle park is free, open 7:00-18:00 in summer and 8:00-17:00 in winter, per visitor guides. The rebuilt buildings open daily 9:00-16:30 for 320 yen, free for over-65s with official ID, according to the official site. The Ishikawa Gate faces the entrance to Kenroku-en.
