An old residential quarter where upper- and middle-ranking samurai families of the Kaga Domain lived, west of Kanazawa's Kōrinbō shopping district. Its lanes keep their yellow earthen walls and stone paving, giving a feel of the feudal era. The old Ōnoshō canal runs between the houses, with small wooden bridges and stone banks. In winter the earthen walls are covered with straw mats, komokake, to protect them from snow and ice, a sight that marks the district in that season. Most houses are lived in and closed to visitors. Among those open is the house of the Nomura family, senior retainers of the Maeda, whose small garden with its pond and stone lanterns is famous and was praised by an American journal of Japanese gardening. The district also has the Ashigaru Museum of foot soldiers' houses and a workshop for Kaga Yūzen silk dyeing. Walking the district is free; the Nomura house costs about 550 yen and opens 8:30-17:30 from April to September and to 16:30 from October to March, per visitor guides. It is a few minutes' walk from the Kōrinbō bus stop.
