An eleventh-to-thirteenth-century monastic complex in the heart of the mountain town of Tsaghkadzor, with four adjoining stone churches, and in the Middle Ages one of the most important religious and teaching centres in Armenia. The oldest and largest church is Saint Gregory, built in 1033, surrounded by smaller churches, a large entrance hall, carved Armenian cross-stones and the remains of old walls and buildings. The complex has been restored in recent decades. A green meadow and trees surround the monastery, with the slopes and ski runs of Mount Teghenis behind it, so the place combines history and mountain scenery. It is a short walk from the first ropeway station and the hotels. Entry is free; the monastery is an active place of worship, so modest dress is required. It is usually combined with the ropeway on a day out from Yerevan.
