Armenia's best-known ski resort, on the slopes of Mount Teghenis above the town of Tsaghkadzor, whose name means the valley of flowers, reached by a chain of chairlifts in successive stages from the town up to nearly 2,800 metres. In winter, usually from December to March, snow covers the slopes and skiers come from Armenia and neighbouring countries, with runs for beginners and experts, equipment hire and ski schools; the resort was once a training base for Soviet athletes. In summer the mountain becomes a place for outings, as visitors ride the lifts over forests and flowering meadows for wide views of the surrounding mountains and, on clear days, Mount Ararat, with hiking and mountain-biking trails. Lift and ski pass prices change with the season and the number of stages and are bought at the ticket office. The town is close to Yerevan, with many hotels and the historic Kecharis Monastery.
