The King Fahd Islamic Cultural Center is the largest mosque in Latin America, in the Palermo district of central Buenos Aires, known locally as the Palermo mosque. The Argentine government granted its land, some 34,000 square metres, in 1995 after President Carlos Menem's state visit to Saudi Arabia; it was built as a gift from Saudi Arabia and inaugurated in 2000. The Saudi architect Zuhair Fayez designed it in the Arab style, with two minarets, a dome and a wide courtyard, and its prayer halls hold 1,200 men and 400 women. The centre also runs primary and secondary schools, a school of Islamic studies and a student residence, and offers free Arabic classes and sporting and social activities. Visitors are welcome on free guided tours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at noon, introducing the mosque's architecture and the symbols and traditions of Islam; tours are cancelled in rain. Modest dress is expected, with a headscarf for women. Worshippers attend the daily and Friday prayers as usual, and the staff can point you to halal food in the city.
