**The most famous physician in history, born here — and Kos was the centre of medicine in the Greek world.** ✅ **Who he was**: **Hippocrates** (about 460–370 BC) was a Greek physician born on **Kos**, regarded as **the father of medicine** because — in the tradition attributed to him and his school — **he separated medicine from magic and religion**: illness has **natural causes** that can be observed and studied, not divine punishment. ✅ **The method**: **clinical observation**, recording symptoms and following a case's development — the foundation of what we now call medicine. ✅ **The «Hippocratic oath»** attributed to him is still invoked at medical graduations, ⚠ **though its attribution to him personally is unproven** and today's text is heavily modified. ✅ **Why Kos**: the island was the centre of a genuine **medical school** around the **Asklepieion** — a healing complex patients travelled to, where physicians were trained. ⚠ **The Asklepieion is 4 km outside town** — the most important site on Kos, **but it has no page here because it has no Wikidata entity**.

**A museum in an Italian building on Kos's central square** — small and well kept, and the key that makes the rest of the island's ruins legible. The building itself dates from the **Italian** period (the 1930s): a sober front on **Eleftherias Square**, which also holds the Ottoman **Defterdar Mosque** and the covered market — **the clearest place on Kos to see all three layers together**: Greek and Roman below ground, Ottoman, and Italian. Its most important holdings are the **Roman mosaics** lifted from the island's houses — the best known depicting **the arrival of Asclepius on Kos**, with **Hippocrates** present. ✅ There are also marble sculptures from the Asklepieion and the agora. ⚠ It is **small**: an hour is enough.
