Kowloon Park is a large public park in Tsim Sha Tsui, covering 13.3 hectares and managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It is a green oasis among busy shopping streets, used by locals for walks and visited for its flamingo lake and gardens. The site once held the British Army's Whitfield Barracks, with an old battery in the northwest. The Urban Council redeveloped it in 1970, demolishing more than 70 buildings. Governor David Trench opened the first stage on 24 June 1970, with a floral clock and a Chinese garden set in an English landscape. You walk among big trees, fountains and a lake home to pink flamingos. There is an aviary, and walls with Chinese windows shaped like a leaf, a hexagon and a fan look out over the trees. The park also has sports facilities, a swimming pool and an avenue of comic stars. Its green contrasts with the towers rising all around. Kowloon Mosque stands at its edge, about 300 m in a straight line from the middle of the park, so the two combine easily, and the Hong Kong Museum of Art is 800 m away. Early morning is pleasant, when locals come to exercise. Enter from Nathan Road, avoid the summer midday heat and bring water.
