Augustus the Strong founded this collection in seventeen twenty, making it one of the oldest and largest print rooms anywhere. It holds around half a million works on paper by some twenty thousand artists, from Duerer, Cranach, Rembrandt and Michelangelo through to Caspar David Friedrich and Otto Dix, together with photographs and architectural drawings. Light governs everything here. Paper and ink fade under prolonged exposure, so nothing can be displayed permanently, and that is why this collection has no fixed gallery you can count on seeing. The rooms in the Residenzschloss change several times a year with temporary shows, each pulling a different seam out of the store. Through twenty twenty-six the exhibition drew on the museum's Japanese works on paper, a holding of more than ten thousand items of which most had never been shown. For a seriously interested visitor the real privilege is not the exhibition but the study room. Anyone may request specific original sheets by appointment and sit with them at a table with no glass in between, which is rare in a collection of this rank. The exhibition ticket costs six euros on its own and is also covered by the combined Residenzschloss ticket if you are seeing the other palace collections. The galleries close on Tuesdays.

Write to the collection a few days ahead, name the works you want from the online catalogue, and take an appointment. The service is open to enthusiasts as well as researchers and costs nothing, but it is not a walk-in facility and does not operate every day.
