Pablo Neruda's house in Valparaíso, on Cerro Bellavista, which he bought with friends in the late 1950s and opened in 1961, naming it after its first builder, Sebastián Collado. It is a tall, narrow house of several floors, each one or two rooms, like a tower climbing the hill. Its best feature is its wide windows over the whole bay of Valparaíso, from which the poet loved to watch the ships, the port and the New Year's Eve fireworks. On the top floor is his small study with a panoramic sea view. Inside are Neruda's playful collections: old maps, colourful furniture, glassware, a wooden horse from an old carousel and finds from markets around the world, reflecting his cheerful spirit. The visit comes with an audio guide in several languages. Around the house are a small garden and a café; take a taxi or minibus, as the road is steep. Book ahead in high season, since visitor numbers are limited.
