Lagoa do Abaeté is a lagoon among sand dunes in Itapuã, about 10 km north of central Salvador, protected since 1993 by the Lagoas e Dunas do Abaeté Metropolitan Park. A lookout at the end of the Ladeira do Mirante gives a wide view over the park. The lagoon holds a special place in Bahian culture: the washerwomen who once laundered clothes in its water have their association's headquarters in the park, and the composer Dorival Caymmi sang of it. Its name is said to come from the Tupi awa-eté, 'true man'.
