Dalian's best-known family park, on the city's southern coast at Laohutan Bay, whose name means «Old Tiger Beach»; it began as a seaside park in 1959 and in 2002 became an ocean park holding China's top tourism rating. It has large marine animal halls, the best known being the polar hall with polar bears, penguins and walruses, along with a coral hall with glass tunnels, a marine animal hall, a bird forest and a theatre for marine animal shows; when it opened, its polar hall was among the largest of its kind in the world. The park spreads along the coast and hills between rocky cliffs and beaches, with a cable car above it looking out to sea, a huge tiger sculpture by the sea that has become a city landmark, and rides for children; it opens from 8:30 to 16:30. The ticket for its five halls is about CNY 220 in peak seasons and about CNY 190 the rest of the year, with the cable car extra, per visitor guides. The park is large, so allow most of a day and check show times on arrival.
