A small stone fort on the Larnaca shore at the southern end of the Finikoudes promenade, built to guard the south coast and the harbour. It grew from a small Byzantine fort of the late twelfth century, enlarged between 1382 and 1398. Over the centuries it served as a fortress, an artillery post and a prison, and today it is a small museum. Its upper walls look out over the sea, the beach and the promenade. The upper floor holds the Larnaca Medieval Museum, with finds covering some fifteen centuries, from the Early Christian period to Ottoman times; old cannons stand in the courtyard, which has been turned into an open-air theatre for about 200 people. The Büyük (Grand) Mosque with its minaret stands next door, and the castle is an easy walk from the promenade. Half an hour to an hour is enough.
