By tram to the Blue Wonder area, then a short walk along the bank. The natural combination is a full day east of the city: the Blue Wonder bridge, then the funicular and the suspension railway that climb to the district above, then Pillnitz Palace by steamer or bus. The Leonhardi Museum is a small stop inside that day rather than a trip in itself.

The Leonhardi Museum is a strange building in the Loschwitz district on the bank of the Elbe: a Gothic Revival structure with small towers and crenellations that looks like a miniature castle among trees โ originally an ice store and sandstone quarry, converted in the nineteenth century by the painter Eduard Leonhardi into a studio and gallery for his own work. Leonhardi was a landscape painter preoccupied with the German forest, and this early museum of his was among the first attempts by an artist in Germany to exhibit his own work in a building designed for that purpose, rather than waiting on the city's galleries. The city of Dresden runs it today as a contemporary art space: temporary exhibitions by artists from the region, changing several times a year, so the content differs entirely depending on when you come. The constant value is the building and the setting: Loschwitz is a district of villas on the Elbe slope, reached by tram or across the Blue Wonder bridge.
