A zoo in a forest: Ljubljana's zoo sits on the southern slope of Rožnik hill, twenty hectares of real woodland threaded by a path climbing between enclosures — lions, Siberian tigers, cheetahs, giraffes and elephants, and the European and Slovenian animals from lynx and brown bear to chamois and the strange cave olm in its dark house. A children's farm with animals to touch and feed, daily feeding shows for seals and predators, playgrounds and a café — a zoo small enough to circle in two hours without exhaustion, which parents love. Ten minutes by bus from the centre, or a half-hour walk through Tivoli and the Rožnik forest, the finer way.
