Mãe Bonifácia State Park covers 77 hectares inside the city of Cuiabá, mostly cerrado (Brazilian savanna) woodland, home to small marmoset monkeys. It is a breathing space for residents and visitors, receiving hundreds of people on an average day and far more at weekends. It has five shady paved and dirt trails totalling more than 4 km, the longest being the 3,480 m Trilha das Bandeiras, outdoor exercise stations, a 12-metre lookout tower with views over the city in every direction, a playground and an environmental education centre. It is named after Mãe Bonifácia, a Black woman said to have been a folk healer in the 19th century who helped people escaping slavery evade their pursuers. Entry is free, and it opens daily 5:00-19:00 under a decree issued in April 2026. Early morning and late afternoon are best, away from Cuiabá's heat.
